A day in the Life of a Technical Consultant

I’ve wanted to get into IT since my school days where, along with a weekend job in a sweet-shop, I would work as an IT technician once a week after school. Some years later, whilst studying for my degree in Computer Science, I was also part of a scholarship scheme run by Channel 4, who subsequently employed me as a Software Engineer after graduation. I joined Amido for the wealth of experience on offer at a consultancy, their great client list and technology-agnostic approach, and the fast-paced environment and lean infrastructure of a mature start-up.

I’m currently working on-site at ASOS having previously worked on projects for CBRE. With my current team, we generally work on the basis of two-week sprints, beginning each day with our daily scrum. Occasionally we interchange with a more Kanban-style approach, depending on what work is on our agenda and what our deadlines are. I work closely with our Senior Devs, our ASOS Business Analyst, QA teams, and Solutions Architects, delivering software in line with Agile and Lean development principles. At present, I’m leading a piece of development around the phasing out of our existing tactical-solution for retrieving translations data.

At Amido I’ve been able to hone my existing skills in C# .NET, whilst gaining a deeper understanding of more advanced concepts such as Generics and Concurrency. In addition I’m now proficient with ElasticSearch, Azure & SQL Server Integration Services. Amido’s generous training budget has also provided me the opportunity to seek further courses and qualifications outside of the office, and in February I became the company’s first AWS-certified professional. It isn’t all just work, work, work though, aside from my day-job, I also had the chance to learn how to ski during our company conference in Alpendorf, Austria in January.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with some very experienced and gifted people, as well as the frequent social events, and am really looking forward to getting stuck in with the exciting projects we have in the pipeline.
